Problem
Most couples apps turn relationships into a chore chart: streaks, scores, daily check-ins – and it shows. Across the biggest apps in the category, reviewers complain about the same things: the daily prompts run dry and start repeating after a few weeks, partner syncing breaks and brings no added value, and there’s no depth tying together everything they do in the app.
At Ember, there was another problem – inconsistent visuals and branding completely disconnected from target users, as well as content itself.
Turns out couples don’t need another scoreboard. They need Em.
Approach
On homepage, Insights surface what Em’s noticing about the couple – an observation with reasoning behind it and recommended actions for them to take.
From there,
the app splits to match the couple’s real life: Moments for when they’re together, Sparks for when they’re apart, plus quizzes and themed conversations to keep things moving either way.
Patterns go deeper – surfacing how each partner actually communicates, handles conflict, and connects intimately, giving language to things most couples only sense, but never quite name.
Impact
The redesigned Insights system roughly doubled engagement across the board.
Completion rate among users who opened an insight climbed from 40% to almost 80%, and the loop that previously died after one interaction – converting at a hard ceiling of 20% – now converts at almost 60%, meaning couples are actually coming back for their next insight instead of engaging once and dropping off.
